… Robyn Mungulu, Senior guide for Wandjina Tours
at Freshwater Cove on the Kimberley Coast in Western Australia

Robyn is a saltwater woman, renowned artist and senior guide at the remote Freshwater Cove; home of Wandjina Tours. Freshwater Cove is known for its large population of humpback whales and a launching point to iconic destinations like Montgomery Reef and Raft point in the West Kimberley.

Wandjina Tours is the newest – and only – Aborigial Tourism Company on this stretch of vast Kimberley coastline and Robyn has been there from the beginning showcasing her country, Dambimangari which means “homeland” in the local Worrorra language.

Working for Wandjina Tours enables Robyn to combine both her passions: painting Namarali and guiding. She guides people coming off the passing Kimberley cruise boats around her country and interprets paintings she and the other artists create at Freshwater Cove. “It’s beautiful to paint while listening to the sound of whales slapping their tales on the water” says Robyn. “Sometimes we just stop painting and listen to them. You could watch them all day.”

Visitors also receive a warm, traditional welcome when they step onto the country. “When people get off the boat for a tour, we paint ochre on their face, they can’t stop smiling. Sometimes people even get emotional…”

Now those visitors can stay overnight, or longer, at Freshwater Cove in the new cabines. They get to watch the artists paint and hear the stories of the paintings.

Steamed fish with rice and damper
                         (by Robin Mungulu)

Ingredients for fish:
  • 1 whole fish no bigger than 40cm, scaled and gutted
  • Rice
  • Native lemon grass
  • Cabbage
  • Lime and chilli to garnish
  • Soy sauce
Place fish in bamboo steamer on top of a bed of cabbage ( cabbage stops the skin from sticking to the bamboo steamer ). Place native lemon grass in pot of water then place bamboo steamer on top of pot. Steam until cabbage and fish is tender. Remove from boiling pot to cool down.

Ingredients for the damper:
  • Plain flour 2 and a half cups
  • Self-raising flour 2 cups
  • Water

Combine self-raising flour with plain flour then add water. Mix until doughy, knead into a circular shape, then with the palm of your hand flat it out. Do not make it too flat. Preheat fry pan until warm then sprinkle with pinch of flour. Place the flat dough onto the fry pan and cook until the under side is brown then turn over. Place on a wire rack to cool.

Serving suggestion:
On a flat plate place cabbage then place fish on top, surround the fish with rice, then garnish with thin slices of lime and chilli. To top it of cut a slice of damper and a bowl with soy sauce.
